Embracing Individuality and Challenging Norms

Embracing individuality and respectfully challenging norms can serve as a catalyst for both personal growth and professional development. Often, people become caught up in what others are doing or what is considered popular. Following the crowd may feel normal and comfortable, but stepping outside of societal expectations can create discomfort. However, those moments of discomfort are often where meaningful growth occurs. Learning to embrace individuality takes time, reflection, and meaningful experiences.

For a long time, I recognized that I often behaved differently from societal expectations, yet I still felt pressure to conform. That hesitation came from worrying about being judged by my peers in classes, at the gym, or by friends. Attending a large university can amplify these pressures, especially during a time when students are making important decisions about their future. At USC, students may feel pressure to participate in certain social norms such as party culture or Greek life simply because others around them are doing so.

Studying abroad helped me better understand the importance of embracing individuality. While living in Paris, I often chose to travel and explore independently because I thrived in that environment. Transitioning from a structured routine at home to a lifestyle that required independence allowed me to develop greater confidence and self-awareness. I was responsible for creating my own schedule and deciding how to spend my time, whether it involved traveling, exploring the city, or focusing on academics.

Living abroad also removed much of the pressure I felt to meet social expectations back home. Instead of worrying about what others were doing, I began asking myself what experiences I wanted to pursue. This independence encouraged me to trust my own decisions and prioritize what aligned with my personal goals.

Academically, my experience in Europe differed significantly from my experience at USC. During my Global Studies class in Paris, discussions emphasized understanding different cultural perspectives rather than identifying a single correct answer. This environment encouraged deeper conversations and critical thinking. Learning alongside students from different cultural backgrounds expanded my understanding of global perspectives and strengthened my cultural intelligence.

In contrast, competitive environments such as business school can unintentionally encourage conformity. Students often compare themselves to others when thinking about internships, career paths, and social life. My experience abroad helped me recognize the importance of maintaining my own values despite these external pressures. I also realized that it can sometimes feel easier to express individuality in unfamiliar environments than among close peers, where expectations may already exist.

During this time, I began to understand my development through the concept of Growth Mindset, which suggests that abilities and intelligence can develop through effort, reflection, and challenges. When I made decisions that differed from those of my peers, I initially experienced discomfort and self-doubt. However, I began to view that discomfort as an opportunity for growth rather than a sign that I was making the wrong choice. This shift in perspective allowed me to approach both academic and social situations with greater confidence.

Comparing my experiences at USC with my academic environment abroad deepened this understanding. Competitive environments often reinforce conformity through visible measures of success, while my European classroom emphasized dialogue, reflection, and intellectual exploration. Recognizing how different environments influence behavior strengthened my ability to adapt while maintaining authenticity.

Embracing individuality at USC has helped me become the best version of myself. Whether it involves surrounding myself with people who share similar goals, engaging in activities that align with my lifestyle, or spending time reflecting independently, these choices allow me to focus on my personal growth and values.

Although challenging norms can lead to growth, I also learned that independence must be balanced with collaboration. My experiences abroad and at USC taught me how to remain authentic while still learning from others. This balance has allowed me to stay competitive while also thriving in environments that support my individuality.

This photo represents one of the many times I traveled independently while studying abroad in Europe. Choosing to travel on my own allowed me to step outside of societal expectations and make decisions based on what I personally wanted to experience. Navigating new cities, cultures, and environments independently helped me develop confidence, self-awareness, and adaptability. This experience reinforced my understanding that embracing individuality often requires stepping outside of one's comfort zone and trusting your own decisions.

Going Global With Barbra Presentation

This image is from a presentation I gave to a group of traveling students where I spoke about my study abroad experience and the importance of embracing individuality while living abroad. During this presentation, I shared how stepping outside of social expectations and making independent choices helped shape my personal growth. Reflecting on these experiences allowed me to connect my time abroad with the concept of embracing individuality and challenging norms. Sharing my experiences with other students also allowed me to encourage them to pursue opportunities that align with their own goals and values.
